EBM’s Journey to Success
A Message from the Managing Director

Mr Khawar Masood Butt is the Chairman and Managing Director of English Biscuit Manufacturers (Pvt.) Limited. A corporate veteran and a true leader, he transformed EBM into one of the fastest growing food companies in Pakistan and an undisputed market leader in the biscuit industry.

It all began in the year 1967; the year that saw the advent of the biscuit company then named Peek Freans Pakistan Limited. But no clairvoyant could havepredicted that it would be this very biscuit company which would go on to become the country's leading manufacturer of biscuits and cookies.Forty years down a well traversed road, the company now known for decades as English Biscuit Manufacturers (Private) Limited, or EBM, hascome a long way. But this is no arbitrary rags to riches tale based on good fortune alone. EBM's journey to success has been paved with consistent adaptability, tolerance and conservative financing.

Courtesy of our Never Compromise on Quality philosophy, coupled with our constant drive to please our consumers we can today be rightly proud of ourselves; EBM has an annual sales figure of Rs 22 billion ($220 million) and an annual production capacity of 139,000 tonnes. Our biscuits are some of the most well-loved and widely consumed in the nation; Peek Freans Sooper was ranked Pakistan’s No 1 biscuit in a recent Nielsen ranking and other Peek Freans brands rank highly with consumers as well.

Continually striving to attain excellence, EBM has attained ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001:2004, HACCP certification and IIP (Investors in People) recognition. We are also the only food company to have been awarded Environmental Excellence Awards for three successive years in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Over time, I am proud to say that EBM has assumed a personality of its own to become a true Living Company. Of course, the most important element of a Living Company is its people. Our shareholders, management and employees are the ones who create wealth for the company, and they are our most valuable resources.

We are focused on being the best, and improvement and innovation at EBM are not merely buzzwords, but actual practices that we follow daily thanks to endeavours such as the Centre of Excellence (COE). You can read more about the COE on this website; it is a state-of-the-art research facility that serves the industry and academia alike, fulfilling our mission to constantly improve as well as to be of service to others. Being the sole company in the industry to have achieved recognised international certifications pertaining to quality control, environmental management systems and human resources management, at EBM we work hard to live up to our responsibility of delivering excellence to consumers via our network of dedicated employees and widespread chain of committed vendors, suppliers, dealers and distributors. EBM is categorised among the highest tax payers of Pakistan, contributing over Rs 2 billion to the National Exchequer annually.

Corporations grow and change over time. In the final analysis, the best companies are those who strategically pursue the Triple Bottom Line approach to business – that is, a business growth model based on the 3Ps of People, Planet and Profit. This ensures the welfare and growth of society at large (People), the preservation of the environment and precious natural resources (Planet) and the pursuit of profitability (Profits) in an ethical manner. At EBM, we continue to strive towards these 3Ps, and look forward to an exciting future of even greater growth and prosperity for all involved.
